What causes snoring? What is Bruxism?

Snoring is caused by vibrations of the soft palate, uvula or base of tongue. While sleeping, the muscles relax and cause a partial airway obstruction. It usually happens during inhalation. If snoring occurs for ten seconds or longer, the amount of oxygen in the blood decreases and can awaken you from sleeping. Snoring occurs in all age groups and both genders. It has been estimated that 60% of men and 40% of women between the ages of 40 and 60 years of age snore. Over 45 million American adults snore. Snoring affects your health, your sleep, and the sleep of your partner. Oral appliances are very effective at stopping or reducing snoring.

Bruxism is gnashing, clenching or grinding of the teeth. Usually this occurs while you are sleeping. Bruxism causes jaw muscle pain and abnormal wear of the teeth. The sound can be like fingernails on a chalkboard to your sleeping partner. Morning headaches and tight or tired facial muscles are a sign of nighttime bruxism.
